Exercises: Revelation, Chapter 1

I have made a list of questions that might be helpful to understand Revelation Chapter 1 (not going into detail regarding the seven churches, because chapter 2 and 3 deal a lot with them):
  1. Who is mentioned in Revelation 1:1, and what are their tasks?
  2. Can you say what John is doing and why? What is John writing about?
  3. What is meant by "for the time is at hand" in Revelation 1:3? Which time is meant? (Compare to Mat 4:17, Mat 26:18)
  4. What do the seven Spirits which are before His throne represent in Revelation 1:4? (compare to Revelation 1:20)
  5. Where and how does Jesus appear in Revelation 1? How is He described there? Can you make a list of attributes?
  6. "Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen." (Revelation 1:7 KJV) Compare it to Matthew 24:30. What does it mean?
  7. Try to find other verses where God and clouds are mentioned. What do clouds usually represent?
  8. How does John introduce himself? Why was he on Patmos?
  9. What is Jesus' voice compared to in 1:10? Where else in the Bible are trumpets mentioned, and what a symbolical meaning do they have?
  10. By which words does Jesus introduce Himself?
  11. What do the seven golden candlesticks represent in Revelation 1:12?
  12. Where does John see Jesus first, and what does this picture suggest?
  13. How is Jesus clothed in John's vision there, and does it have a symbolical meaning (Rev 1:13)?
  14. What about His hair? White like wool, as white as snow - is there a symbolical meaning?
  15. What about His eyes? They were as a flame of fire (Rev: 1:14). Try to find other verses in the Bible were this is mentioned (it turns up thrice in Revelation, for example).
  16. Do Jesus' feet "like unto fine brass" mean something?
  17. What is His voice compared to? Find other verses where water has a symbolical meaning.
  18. What do the seven stars in Rev 1:16 represent? Where exactly are they in John's vision?
  19. What is the symbolical meaning of the sharp two-edged sword in Revelation 1:16 that comes from Jesus' mouth? Do you know of other verses where this image turns up?
  20. What is His countenance in Revelation 1:16 compared to? Are there other verses?
  21. What do you think why John fell at Jesus' feet as dead in Revelation 1:17?
  22. What does Jesus mean by it when he says, "I am the first and the last, I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore"?
  23. Why does Jesus lay His right hand on John?
  24. There are keys mentioned in chapter 18. What does Jesus tell John about them? What does it say about Jesus?
  25. Which things was John to write down? How many aspects of time can you see there? (Rev 1:19)
  26. What is the mystery that Jesus reveals in the end of Rev 1:20
  27. The number 7 appears a few times in this chapter. How often, and in which connection?
